If you’re a dog lover, a dachshund enthusiast, or simply a fan of adorable crochet patterns – you’re in the right place! 🧶🐶

I am thrilled to introduce the Darling Dachshund Mosaic Blanket CAL, a fun crochet along inspired by a very special pup. This blanket is designed using overlay mosaic crochet – a technique that looks super difficult but is surprisingly beginner-friendly (and totally addictive once you get started!).

Whether you’ve joined one of my CALs before or you’re brand new here, you’ll find everything you need to take part, feel supported, and have fun – from a free version of the pattern on my blog to a full eBook with written instructions, available in both UK and US terms (single-sided and reversible, plus a large print option).

But before we dive into the stitches, let’s take a moment to appreciate our short-legged, long-bodied muses…

🐶 5 Fun Facts About Dachshunds

  1. They Were Bred to Hunt Badgers!
Dachshunds were originally developed in Germany as hunting dogs, specifically bred to flush out badgers from burrows – hence their long, low bodies and courageous personalities.

  2. They’re Surprisingly Fierce (and Funny)
Despite their size, dachshunds have bold, feisty temperaments. They’re fiercely loyal and often think they’re much bigger than they actually are – which can lead to some hilarious behaviour!

  3. There Are Three Coat Types
Dachshunds come in smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired varieties – each with its own unique charm. Which type will your yarn colours represent?

  4. They’re Pop Culture Icons
These little sausages have appeared everywhere from Picasso paintings to Disney films. They’ve even inspired high-fashion handbags and viral memes!

  5. They’re Big Time Burrowers
Dachshunds love to snuggle under blankets and cushions – it’s in their nature! So it’s only fitting that this blanket is both inspired by and perfect for wrapping up with your own doxie.

Part 3 (‘dog’ in braille)

I decided to include the word “dog” in both braille and morse code as a little hidden detail within the Darling Dachshund Blanket design. I loved the idea of adding a secret message that only a few people might instantly recognize – like a special code just for those in the know. It was a fun way to weave something unique into the blanket, giving it an extra layer of creativity beyond the obvious dog-themed motifs.

In classical fashion, I opted to use an evelope border for this design – why weave in ends if you can avoid it, right?! A full video tutorial for the envelope border can be found here.
