When I was invited to take part in the Christmas in July Mosaic Blanket CAL, hosted by the always-fabulous Juniper & Oakes, it was a no-brainer. I’ve joined Erin’s collaborative crochet alongs for the past two years, and they are always such a joyful, creative whirlwind. So of course I said yes!

As soon as I saw the theme — Christmas in July — my mind raced to all the cosy, nostalgic images that make up a traditional holiday season here in the UK. And one idea kept bubbling to the top: the classic Christmas pudding.

Steaming hot, drizzled with brandy sauce, and set alight at the table with a festive sparkle — it’s one of those iconic, unmistakably British symbols of Christmas. Best of all? It’s only ever associated with this time of year. That made it the perfect inspiration for my design — something both instantly recognisable and a little unexpected in the crochet world.

So I’m thrilled to introduce my Christmas Pudding Mosaic Crochet Motif — a sweet and slightly spiced slice of festive fun that’s part of this year’s Christmas in July CAL. This is a wonderful chance to get into the holiday spirit early, try new crochet techniques, and create a blanket full that cosy holiday feeling.

And let’s be honest — how amazing would it feel to have your Christmas crochet project finished well before December rolls around? No last-minute making. No crafting under pressure. Just the pure joy of celebrating early and stitching along with a lovely, supportive community.

5 Fun Facts About Christmas Puddings

  1. They used to be savoury! The original medieval version of Christmas pudding was more of a meat-based pottage than the sweet dessert we know today.

  2. Stir-up Sunday is a British tradition where families gather to mix the pudding five weeks before Christmas — everyone takes a turn stirring and makes a wish!

  3. Coins in the pudding were once common — finding one meant good luck, wealth, or even marriage in the coming year.

  4. Flaming the pudding with brandy is more than just a party trick — it’s said to symbolise the passion of Christ and the Christmas spirit.

  5. It’s deeply British — despite the global popularity of many Christmas desserts, the rich, fruity pudding is uniquely tied to the UK holiday table.

What is a CAL?

A CAL, or Crochet Along, is a fabulous community event where crocheters across the globe work on the same pattern simultaneously. It unfolds in stages, providing the perfect opportunity to share your progress and inspire fellow crafters.
